ADAM MALIK (1917-1984)

Adam Malik was my patron in self education (autodidact). He was my mentor, friend as well as my teacher. Adam Malik was one of the founding fathers of the Republic of Indonesia. He was the founder of the Indonesian  National News Agency Antara, on December 13,1937.  Adam Malik's  career as diplomat and statesman were: Third Chairman of the Komite Nasional Indonesia Pusat (Central IndonesianNational Committee) 1945, Ambassador to the Soviet Union and Poland 1962, Minister of Trade, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Co-founder of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), President of the United Nations General Assembly in 1971, Chairman of the Indonesian Parliament 1977, Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia 1978-1983, Member of theWilly Brandt Commission.

I assisted Adam Malik  in preparation of a book on the Indonesia-Malaysia Confrontation. I spent several months to search news and articles on the confrontation. I collected some 3.000 items. But alas, he died on September 5, 1984, before we started to write.

1985-       Secretary of the Yayasan Adam Malik (Adam Malik Foundation). The aims of the foundation are as follows: To keep and maintain the valuable inherited goods as the property or collection of the late Haji Adam Malik, in order to be still preserved, and can be enjoyed by the general community; To continue the various ideals of the late Haji Adam Malik which are not yet realized in the frame of materializing a just and prosperous Indonesian society, in accordance with Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution.

I took part in the preparation of the Seminar Nasional Pengusulan H. Adam Malik Sebagai Pahlawan Nasional [National Seminar on the Proposal of Adam Malik as National Hero], Medan, March 30, 1998. I submitted the above two articles to the seminar, but did not read this paper, because I was in Mecca for pilgrimage when the seminar was held in Medan. Eight months later, President B.J. Habibie decided to honor Adam Malik with the prestigious title, National Hero, on November 9, 1998.

WILLEM ISKANDER (1840-1876)

1975-       I began my research on life and works of Sati Nasution gelar Sutan Iskandar also known as Willem Iskander in 1975. He was born in Pidoli Lombang, Mandailing, in March 1840 and died in Amsterdam on May 8, 1876. He was the long forgotten Indonesian pioneer in teachers’ education. He founded a Native Teachers Training School [Kweekschool voor Inlandsch Onderwijzers] in Mandailing, North Sumatra, in 1862. I made library and archival researches on Willem Iskander in the Netherlands in 1975, 1981, 1985 and 1989. I wrote many articles and delivered lectures on life and works of Willem Iskander. Then, the central government awarded him ad postuum Hadiah Seni (Art Award) on August 15, 1978, as a symbol of his acceptance as one of the Indonesian Man of Thought. Here are some of my works on Willem Iskander, as follows:

1976a      “Charles Adriaan van Ophuysen peneliti bahasa dan sastra Mandailing” [Charles Adriaan van Ophuysen: researcher of language and literature of the Mandailing]. In: Waspada; June 16.

1976b      “Menempatkan Willem Iskander sebagai cendekiawan nasional” [To place Willem Iskander as a national intellectual]. In: Sinar Indonesia Baru, 1976 (31 Jan.)

1976c      Si Bulus-Bulus Si Rumbuk : sebuah buku bacaan yang ditulis oleh Willem Iskander(1840-1876) [Si Bulus-Bulus Si Rumbuk-Rumbuk : a book written by Willem Iskander (1840-1876) / diterjemahkan dari bahasa Mandailing ke dalam bahasa Indonesia oleh Basyral Hamidy Harahap. Willem Iskander ; translated from Mandailing language into Indonesian by Basyral Hamidy Harahap. - Jakarta : PT Campusiana. – 107 p. ;  with news clippings on the centenary commemoration of the death of Willem Iskander, May 8, 1976. - First edition of this bilingual collected poems and short stories (original text is in Mandailing language) was published for the first time in 1976.

1977a      “Pertemuan Willem Iskander dengan Abdullah dan Multatuli” [Rendezvous of Willem Iskander with Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir Munshi and Multatuli]. In: Waspada, May 18, 1977.

Willem Iskander read works of Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir Munshi, Secretary of Thomas Stamford Raffles in Singapore, and works of Eduard Douwes Dekker also known as  Multatuli, the author of Max Havelaar, 1860. Willem Iskander wrote Si Bulus-Bulus Si Rumbuk-Rumbuk, a collection of  satirical poems and short stories which was first published in Batavia in 1872. The structure of Willem Iskanderfs poems are more modern than those of Abdullahfs. Willem Iskander was influenced by Multatuli in writing satirical poems.

1977b      “101 tahun wafatnya Willem Iskander (1840-1876): pelopor modernisator, pendidik dan penyair” [101 years commemoration of the death of Willem Iskander (1840-1876): pioneer of modernization, educator, and poet]. In: Selecta. nos. (821):20-21; (822):20-21; (823):20-21.

1977d      “Tinjauan atas tinjauan Si Bulus-Bulus Si Rumbuk-Rumbuk” [Commentary on a review on Si Bulus-Bulus Si Rumbuk-Rumbuk]. In: Majalah Sastra Horison, vol. XII, pp. 188, 189, 191. My commentary on J.U. Nasution’s article, one of the well-known Indonesian literary critics. He reviewed my Indonesian translation of Si Bulus-Bulus Si Rumbuk-Rumbuk in literary magazine Horison. I mentioned in this article, that his review on Willem Iskander’s works have to be reviewed. Eventhough J.U. Nasution is a Mandailing origin, but he does not speak Mandailing dialect. That is why his commentary on my Indonesian translation of the Mandailing text is not proper.

1977e      “Willem Iskander pelopor kesusastraan Indonesia modern” [Willem Iskander: pioneer in Indonesian modern literature]. - Lecture at Padangsidimpuan in January 1977.

1977f       “Willem Iskander (1840-1876) pelopor pendidikan Indonesia pertama” [Willem Iskander (1840-1876) the first pioneer in education in Indonesian history]. In: Didaktika, no. 3, Jakarta.

1986a      “Catatan atas Bismar Siregar: mayat Willem Iskander tertembus peluru” [Notes on Bismar Siregar’s article: Willem Iskander’s body was hit by bullet]. In: Sinar Harapan, June 6, 1986. This article was one of 5 articles in connection with a polemic on the life and works of Willem Iskander. DR. Daoed Joesoef, former Minister of Education and Culture, wrote three articles (Sinar Harapan, 14, 15, and 16 May 1986) on the remarkable achievements of Willem Iskander in promoting education in Indonesian history. DR. Joesoef also mentioned his respect to me as a researcher of Willem Iskander who has successfully placed Willem Iskander in the proper place as a pioneer in teachers training education in Indonesian history. Bismar Siregar, a notable Supreme Judge, reacted to DR. Joesoef articles. He denied DR. Joesoef articles including my findings on life and works of Willem Iskander (Sinar Harapan, 31 May 1986). I made it clear in my article. I proved that the Supreme Judge had read a certain book and quoted many false information on historical events in Indonesian history, including on life and works of Willem Iskander. The editor of the daily Sinar Harapan, Samuel Pardede, asked me to stop the polemic by answering Bismar Siregar with some of my findings on life and works of Willem Iskander. So, my article then closed the discussions.

Political Life: General Elections

1981a      The Political trends of South Tapanuli and its reflections in the general elections (1955, 1971, and 1977). Paper presented at the International Interdisciplinary Symposium on Cultures and Societies of North Sumatra, held at the Universität Hamburg, Germany, 25-27 November 1981. The proceedings of the symposium has been published in 1987 by Dietrich Reimer Verlag in Berlin and Hamburg under the title Cultures and societies of North Sumatra, edited by Rainer Carle in co-operation with C.E. Cunningham, M. Kartomi, R.W. Liddle, B. Nothofer and H. Uhlig, and introduced by B. Dahm. My paper is on pages 151-169. ISBN 3-496-00181-X.

South Tapanuli is a “muslim country” as it was shown in the results of the 1955 general elections, the first, free, clean  and democratic general elections in Indonesian history. The highest number of the general elections contestants in the whole of Indonesia was 48, that only occurred in Central  Java and North Sumatra Provinces. Only two regencies in North Sumatra Province that reached the highest number, South Tapanuli and North Tapanuli Regencies. Six Islamic political parties out of 48 contestants gained 76.4% votes. Masyumi itself got 38%.

1981b      Surveys on local history, stressing on political history of South Tapanuli.

2001        Kehidupan politik suatu Keresidenan di Sumatera: Tapanuli 1915-1940 [The Political life of a Sumatran Residency: Tapanuli 1915-1940] / Lance Castles. - Pengantar untuk edisi Bahasa Indonesia [Introduction for Indonesian edition] / oleh Basyral Hamidy Harahap. – Cet. ke-1. - Jakarta : Kepustakaan Populer Gramedia, 2001. - pp. vi-xxxi. - ISBN 979-9023-65-3.

My introduction shows that my paper in Hamburg The Political trends of South Tapanuli conform with Lance Castles’ dissertation, that there was a strong differences in political, religious, and socio-cultural attitudes between South Tapanuli (read: Angkola Mandailing) and North Tapanuli peoples (read: Toba Bataks).

2002        Biarkanlah Propinsi Sumatera Utara tetap utuh seperti sekarang [Leave North Sumatra Province still solid as it is now]. In: Jurnal Otonomi Daerah. - Volume I, No.6 (June 2002): p.44. - Jakarta : Direktorat Jenderal Otonomi Daerah Departemen Dalam Negeri dan Otonomi Daerah.

The intention of small groups among Toba Bataks and Malays to create the Tapanuli Province [read: Batak Province], and East Sumatra Province [read: Malay Province], will strongly motivate tribalism among them. The Angkola Mandailing peoples [who occupy the fertile areas, South Tapanuli Regency, Mandailing Natal Regency, and Padangsidimpuan Municipal] refuse the Toba Batak ideas to form the Tapanuli Province. It means, that the area of the intended Tapanuli Province will be only the former North Tapanuli and Central Tapanuli regencies. It is nice to read Dr. Nainggolan arguments in a meeting with Van Mook in Medan in 1948, that the creation of  Negara Sumatera Timur (State of East Sumatera), would mean a suicide of the Bataks.

Social Change

Assisstant to Prof. Bernhard Dahm (Universität Kiel, then Universität Passau, Germany) in the field researches on the traditions and modernization in South Tapanuli, North Sumatra in 1979, 1980, 1989, 1994.  Our respondents in 1979 were 800 third year students of 15 Senior High Schools. We distributed questionnaires to the 800 students. We again visited the regency in October 1980 after attending the International Seminar on Cultures,Traditions, and Literatures of Minangkabau in Bukittinggi, September 1980.  Ten years after the first field research, 1989, we visited the same schools and distributed the same questionnaires to 800 third year students of the schools as we did in 1979. We also interviewed many people in the former South Tapanuli Regency. Five years after the second field research, we made observations in 1994, to find out significant changes in social attitudes.  Prof. Dahm has presented the preliminary results of our research in some seminars, conferences and discussions in Jakarta, Bukittinggi, Surabaya, and Manila and other places. The final  results of the research are not yet published.

BOOKS IN PREPARATION

1.     Resolusi Nuddin Lubis [Nuddin Lubis resolution]. - xvii, 543 pages. This manuscript has already been designed for ready to be published.

Indonesia was hit by very critical political conflicts after the abortive coup of the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) in 1965. The Indonesian Parliament (DPR-GR) took important role in seeking the best solution of the very dangerous situation in the beginning of 1967. Nuddin Lubis, chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) faction in the Parliament, proposed a resolution to end the political conflicts.

After long and hard debates, at last the Parliament accepted the so called Resolusi Nuddin Lubis as official Resolution of the Parliament [DPRGR] which urged the Temporary Peoples’ Consultative Assembly (MPRS) to call Special General Assembly to end the political conflicts. Achmad Sjaichu, the Chairman of the Parliament, handed over the Resolution to General A.H. Nasution in his capacity as the Chairman of the MPRS. There were two important decisions of the Special General Assembly: The impeachment of President Sukarno, and the summon of General Suharto as the Acting President of the Republic of Indonesia.

This book was written based on the parliamentary documents, official reports of the Mahkamah Militer Luar Biasa (Mahmilub), newspapers published in Jakarta and other cities in Java, and official documents. I spent one year to read newspapers in the Indonesian National Library to confirm informations I obtained from other sources, including interviews with General A.H. Nasution and Nuddin Lubis in Jakarta.
